Author Dawn Reno Langley delivers a compelling blend of historical fiction, romance, mystery, and social commentary in her new novel, The Mystic, her first book in The Art of Rivers trilogy. Set in a late-1950s Boston suburb near the Mystic River, Langley deftly explores the intersecting forces of domestic abuse, racism, forgiveness, and the transformative power of love.

At the heart of the story is Beth Robbins, a woman whose life has been defined by loss, fear, and abuse. Married young to the volatile Jack Robbins, Beth has learned to survive by shrinking into herself. A tragic hit-and-run accident and the disappearance of her husband become the catalyst that upends her carefully guarded existence, forcing her to confront both her past and the possibility of a different future. As the accident investigation unfolds under the watchful eye of Graham Jackson, a Black police officer navigating the prejudice of his era, Beth begins a journey that is as emotional as it is physical.

Beth’s transformation is the novel’s greatest achievement. Rather than presenting change as sudden or effortless, Langley teases it out through small acts of courage and compassion. She recognizes her fault in the accident and through her awkward journey to redemption, finds friendships she never thought possible outside of her controlling husband. The frightened woman introduced in the opening chapters slowly discovers her own voice, builds confidence and achievement using her long-shuttered artistic gifts, and, ultimately, finds solace in trusting others. By the novel’s conclusion, Beth has evolved into a woman defined not by victimhood but by resilience.

Graham Jackson serves as more than a romantic counterpart. As the only Black police officer in his community, he embodies integrity, patience, and quiet strength while confronting the entrenched racial barriers of the 1950s. His relationship with Beth develops thoughtfully, avoiding sentimentality in favor of mutual respect and emotional healing. Their connection illustrates that love alone cannot erase prejudice or trauma, but it can provide the courage to face both.

Author Dawn Reno Langley holds both an MFA and a Ph.D. A prolific writer, she is the author of nine novels and eight nonfiction works, including You are Divine, a guide to spirituality for modern women. She is also a poet, an essayist, a theater critic, a mosaic artist, and an educator. As a Fulbright Scholar, Dawn has carried her work beyond American borders. She is a nomad, living her life wherever she travels to, and the places she visits always find their way into her stories.

The Mystic is the first in Langley’s The Art of Rivers trilogy that introduces Beth and Graham and will trace the interracial couple across 30 years of marriage, civil rights history, and personal upheaval. The next novel, Sunflower, is set to publish in August, 2026.
