It’s Easter morning in Konken, Germany, a small hamlet in the western state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Church bells have been ringing all morning from near and far, echoing over the rooftops of this hilly community.
I’m here alone at my son’s house while he and his wife are at the hospital in Trier to bring home their two-month old firstborn. Alice, born January 17 of this year, had a malformation in the connection between her large and small intestines. She had emergency surgery to correct the blockage a day later. This surgery was to reconnect her large and small intestines. The surgery went well and my son and his wife are due back home with baby Alice later this afternoon.
Until then, I’m sipping rich European coffee, eating indulgent pastries and thinking about resurrection.
Enjoy the beauty of these bells with me as I remember how precious life is.
