The U.S. loves to celebrate the winter holidays with sparkling lights and decorations for residents and visitors to enjoy during the festive last weeks of the year. Perhaps the most famous holiday lighting tradition in the U.S. is the spectacular Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center and the Fifth Avenue window displays. But this list goes deeper into the country with expansive lights, sounds, and celebrations to usher in the holiday spirit.
Bethelehem and Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania
Every December, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania lives up to its nickname, Christmas City USA, transforming into a glowing holiday wonderland steeped in history and tradition. Founded on Christmas Eve in 1741 by Moravian settlers, the city embraces its yuletide heritage with twinkling lights, charming markets, and a warm community spirit that draws visitors from across the country.
Downtown Bethlehem sparkles with thousands of white lights draped across colonial-era buildings, lampposts, and shop windows. The historic district’s cobblestone streets invite leisurely strolls past festive storefronts, horse-drawn carriages, and the towering Christmas tree in Payrow Plaza. The “Live Advent Calendar”—the only one of its kind in the U.S.—offers nightly surprises and treats to gathered visitors. Visitors gather in the Sun Inn Courtyard at 5:30 pm and then a selected visitor is asked to knock on the door.
When the door is opened, a special guest from a local business or organization appears and distributes treats to the crowd.
The Christkindlmarkt Bethlehem is a holiday highlight, featuring artisan gifts, glassblowing demonstrations, live performances, and plenty of seasonal treats like strudel and mulled wine. Just steps away, the Bethlehem Star, perched high on South Mountain, shines as a beacon visible for miles, symbolizing the city’s enduring holiday spirit.
Free outdoor concerts, guided historic walking tours, and the annual “Holiday Putz” nativity displays add to the old-world charm. Even the Lehigh River waterfront glimmers with illuminated bridges and festive decor.
Over in nearby Allentown, the newest holiday light installation in Lehigh Valley comes to life November 14 and runs through the new year until January 3, 2026. “Illumination” is brought to you by the IronPigs at Coca-Cola Park. This outdoor light experience includes over one million twinkling lights, delicious treats and winter cocktails, and tons of activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Continue your holiday adventure with a fun afternoon at the Easton Winter Village in historic, downtown Easton. Browse through as many as 40 vendor huts full of holiday treats and gifts, hum along to festive music, zip around the ice skating rink, take a carriage ride, and more!
