Judgment of Paris assets.Napa Valley is preparing to toast one of the most pivotal moments in modern wine history with a special event honoring the 50th anniversary of the legendary Judgment of Paris. In 1976, a blind tasting in Paris stunned the wine world when California wines triumphed over top French labels, forever elevating Napa Valley onto the global stage.

On May 24, 1976, British wine merchant Steven Spurrier staged a historic blind tasting that matched elite Bordeaux and Burgundy bottles against little-known challengers from California. A judging panel made up entirely of French experts, unaware of each wine’s identity, awarded top honors to two California wines, a 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and a 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon. The surprise results rippled across the global wine industry, demonstrating that vineyards beyond Europe could produce wines of remarkable quality, depth, and aging potential.

Now, five decades later, guests are invited to celebrate that historic victory with an immersive four-hour Grand Tasting in the heart of Napa Valley. Designed for dedicated wine lovers and curious newcomers alike, the $250 all-access experience combines exceptional wines, gourmet cuisine, and lively entertainment in tribute to the region’s remarkable legacy.

Napa Valley, California welcome sign.A centerpiece of the event will spotlight the iconic wineries connected to the original 1976 competition, offering attendees a rare chance to taste wines inspired by the moment that changed everything. More than 50 premier wineries will also pour selections that showcase the depth, innovation, and excellence of contemporary Napa Valley winemaking.

Culinary experiences will include chef-led gourmet action stations featuring freshly prepared pairings, along with garden and grove settings where guests can relax, mingle, and enjoy seasonal local flavors.

The celebration also embraces the French-American spirit of the historic tasting through a festive marketplace inspired by Parisian flea markets and classic Americana. Live music, roaming performers, and entertainment throughout the venue will create a spirited atmosphere worthy of the milestone.

Fifty years after the Judgment of Paris, guests can step into the legacy of that victory and raise a glass to the pioneers who changed the industry forever.
